This will be the 4th year Team “River’s Edge” will be walking to stop diabetes. We are a team made up of coworkers and their families from River’s Edge Hospital & Clinic in St. Peter. For many of the walkers there aren’t any cases of diabetes in their family nor does it affect their life, but their motivation for participating in the walk was to show support for those who live with diabetes day in and day out. And of course for the hot chocolate! Others on the team are more directly affected by diabetes by either having diabetes themselves or having close family members with the disease. Since we work in a health care facility many of our team members have direct contact with patients who have diabetes and see first hand how much of an impact the disease can have on their lives.
Team captain, Jen Donkin, has been involved in the walk since 1998 and when she was hired by River’s Edge Hospital & Clinic in 2010 started working on pulling together a team. We have had anywhere from 5 – 10 members on our team with a goal to continue to increase the size of our team each year. Our team is quite dedicated, we have walked through wind and rain (last year) and have had the pleasure to walk on a beautiful fall morning in years past. We enjoy the scenic walk along the river trail as well as the warm chili and hot chocolate when we get back to Sibley Park.
Over the past three years, we have raised money individually as well as held bake sales and taco meals as fundraisers. Last year, the bake sale and taco meal helped the team raise $600 for a total of $1,624 to help stop diabetes. We start pulling our team together in the summer and continue to fund raise until we get to the walk!
We are honored to be the 2013 Ambassador and look forward to another great walk on Saturday, October 5th. We encourage you to pull some friends and coworkers together to form a team and join us at the American Diabetes Association Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes!
