More than 346 million individuals suffer from diabetes worldwide; 25.8 million within the US with an additional 79 million pre-diabetic. Nearly 2 million of those individuals are newly diagnosed every year. These are staggering statistics! So much can be done to help fight off the development from pre-diabetes to Type 2 diabetes. I want to share what I know and help others live a healthier life to enjoy their passions to the fullest.
I am in the healthcare field. I have a nursing background and have seen firsthand the devastation diabetes can cause to health; amputations, chronic renal disease, coronary heart disease, vision loss, ulcerations in feet and even death from the complications of all these conditions. They exist, but are not well discussed in open forums. I want to give a voice to the alternative, a healthy lifestyle free from the effects of diabetes. My involvement with healthcare organizations and health administrators is another level of awareness I bring to the American Diabetes Association. As I finish my doctorate in health administration, I am more committed than ever before, to tie family and community action with intervention and treatment with healthcare organizations that deliver care. Awareness is key and the first step to change lives for the better. I look forward to making a difference to STOP diabetes.
